I have three pugs and have given them Heartgard ever since they were puppies. When my vet moved a while back, I switched to a new one as he is quite close to me. The problem was that this vet only prescribes Interceptor for heartworms.
Now my dogs have not experienced any adverse side effects from these pills but they do not like them at all. The problem seems that Interceptor comes only in pill form and does not smell or taste as flavorful to the dogs. My tan pug, Taser, categorically refuses to eat the pill.
It does not matter how many attempts are made, he will still figure out a way to spit it back out. I had to insist that this vet write a prescription for Heartgard Plus but at least I can rest easy knowing my dogs are happy and protected from heartworms.
