All About Heartgard Plus Chewables for Dogs
Heartgard Plus Chewables are chewable tablets made from real beef that protects dogs from heartworms while also treating and controlling hookworms and roundworms. Your dog must be at least six weeks old and have a prescription from your veterinarian.
Believed to be the tastiest heartworm chewable tablets on the market, they effectively control the invasion of heartworms, hookworms and roundworms. Better yet, they only have to be administered once a month.
The way Heartgard Plus Chewable tablets work is through the ingredients of ivermectin, which is an antiparisitic medication that prevents heartworms. It also contains Pyrantel Pamoate, which prevents hookworms and roundworms. These have been found to be highly effective.
These tablets should be chewed by your dog rather than swallowed whole. If your dog typically swallows treats whole, these tablets can be easily broken up into smaller pieces and fed to your dog in that form. It is important that your dog takes the full dose. In addition, you must be sure that your dog gets Heartgard Plus each month all year. Don’t be tempted to skip the winter months because your dog can still get infected during that time. If more than two months are missed, call your veterinarian to see what you should do.
There are a few things that you should avoid doing while your dog is on Heartgard Plus. Humans can contract hookworm from animals so you need to be sure you are keeping up a good personal hygiene. You also need to get rid of the fleas on your pet and in your home. Do not feed your dog rodents or raw meat or fish. In order to keep away reinfection, it is recommended that you perform a daily cleanup of stools.
While there are possible side effects of Heartgard Plus, these typically do not occur when the dosage is kept at the recommended one to prevent heartworms. However, if higher doses are administered to your dog, you may notice tremors, dilated pupils and loss of weight. In some cases, there have even been reported deaths from higher doses.
As an added precaution, be sure to mention to your vet if your dog has ever had any allergic reactions to Heartgard Plus in the past. Also mention allergies to beef or other ingredients in the medication.
By following your veterinarian’s instructions, your dog can safely beat deadly heartworms.
